Tackling money conversations with friends
17 June 2024
With all the excitement of the Euros, here's our tips to make sure you don't stretch yourself too far when the games begin.
Here are some handy hints when discussing money saving activities with friends and family this summer.
The enthusiastic pitch
Instead of focusing on what you can’t do – suggest things you can do instead. Offer free or cheaper alternatives emphasising the opportunity to spend time together rather than the need to save money. Offer to alternate the role of host for the games and instigate a BYOB (bring your own beverage) policy.
The honest assist
Sometimes honesty is the best policy. “I’m trying to save some money this summer. How about we do something cheaper?” Chances are, some of your friends are in the same boat and will appreciate you being open and honest. Why not have a picnic in your local park before the game, grab some sandwiches, a cool box full of drinks, and a game of footy. Voila! You’ve got a meal and entertainment for a fraction of the price.
The collaborative attack
Suggest setting a group budget for the summer. Everyone pitches in ideas for affordable activities to enjoy the football, then create a calendar of events that won’t break the bank. This way, no one feels pressured to spend more than they can afford, and everyone gets a say in the plans. Keep an eye on free or low-cost local events. Many places may offer group discounts too, so make sure you do your research.
The team challenge
Turn saving money into a game. Who can find the best deal or come up with the most creative free activity? Reward the winner with a (cheap) prize (or simply bragging rights).
