Staying safe on X
Twitter is a public platform, available to all that meet and uphold its guidelines, and this is crucial to how it connects people. However, you can control how public your presence is on the platform and what personal information can be seen by other users.
We’ll start with the following simple privacy and preference settings.
Mute conversations
Mute words
Block someone
Report
This is a little more complex as reporting can take a few different directions.
Protecting your privacy
Twitter by design allows your posts and interactions to be seen by a wider audience than those that follow you. However, this is a choice when setting up your account. If you ever want to change this setting you can do so by following this method:
- Go to the navigation menu in the top left (three lines) or your profile icon.
- Select Settings and Privacy
- In this menu the top option is Protect your Posts, click the toggle to turn on.
You can of course remove this at any time also by doing the opposite on the toggle. By selecting this option your Posts can only be seen by your X followers. It also restricts what they can do with your posts.
- Not allowing them to Repost or Repost with comments.
- They will only be searchable on X by you or your followers.
It is also worth noting if you reply to an account that doesn’t follow you, they will not be able to see your reply.
