Ransomware:
A growing danger to organisations
Our quick read will introduce you to a topic and point you to where you can learn more
Ransomware is a serious problem for all types of organisations, big or small. It’s a type of cyberattack where criminals lock your computer systems or steal important data, then demand money to give it back.
Recently, some well-known UK retailers were hit by ransomware.
This caused real problems like empty shelves, broken websites, and missed online orders. These attacks can damage a company’s reputation and make it hard for them to get back to normal. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has shared advice on how to stay safe from ransomware.

How do these attacks happen?
Most ransomware attacks start with something called social engineering. This means tricking someone into doing something that seems safe but is actually dangerous. For example:
- Clicking on a fake link or opening a dodgy email attachment
- Giving away personal information or passwords
- Accepting a fake login request on your phone.
Once inside a system, attackers try to get more access by finding weaknesses in software or tricking more people. They look for the most valuable data, steal it, and then lock it using ransomware.
