Keeping children safe online
Introduction to keeping children safe online
In November 2024, the UK Government announced new online safety priorities for Ofcom and the launch of a study into effects of social media on children. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle set out his priorities for the online safety regulator, Ofcom, in preparation of the Online Safety Act in 2025. Peter Kyle said, “While the Online Safety Act sets the foundation of creating better experiences online, we must keep pace with technology as it evolves to create a safer internet, especially for children”. As part of this work the government announced 5 key strategic priorities.
This is a positive step towards improving online safety for children and young people, but it’s equally important that we continue to educate ourselves on the risks and best practices to keep children and young people safe online.
Throughout this module, we’ll be exploring the potential risks that could occur, best practices and tips for parents and guardians to help keep children and young people safe online.
