Device security
Keep your device updated
We’re not talking about buying a new phone or tablet, we’re talking about device and system updates, the notifications you receive telling you an update is available.
Your device lets you know when there is an update for the firmware, operating system or apps you have. You’ll receive notifications when changes have been made to improve security or fix older versions of software on your device, this can help your device run more smoothly and keep you safe.
Updates for your apps could include changes to help you unlock the next level on your favourite game or fix issues with functionality on your banking apps. If you haven’t got the latest filter available on your social media account, it’s possibly because you're not running the latest version, so check the settings to see if an update is available.
Types of updates
How do I do this?
To check if your device's OS is up to date go to 'about device' or 'general' and click 'system updates' or 'software update'. If it’s not up to date, it will usually state ‘update available’ and you can choose to download and update. This can sometimes be a lengthy process, depending on the size of the update.
Normally your device will recommend keeping the phone on charge or at a high battery charge state to avoid being cut-off mid update. It’s also advisable to conduct this update overnight while sleeping, so it won’t impact your device usage during the day, you can usually opt to schedule the installation to run overnight when you receive the notification.
Your device will normally need to restart as part of the update, so complete any tasks before committing to the update process.
Don't jailbreak or root your device
This relates to unlocking the device and removing restrictions allowing the user to get around the manufacturer's safety features and install software that wouldn’t usually be permitted.
It may be tempting to allow access to app stores or downloads that bypass payment, as seen on traditional app stores, but this presents massive risk to the operation of the device and poses threats, as these applications won't have been vetted and could then be used to hack or steal information from your device by cyber criminals.
